This rag tag group has been been tainted by chaos (nurgle) while scavenging through the sump!  They are oblivious to this fact at this moment!  UPDATE!  they have now been whittled down into submission after 7 games and they have lost the favor of nurgle or any chaos god for that matter.  After months of long prayer, the emperor has granted them another try!
