The Trodden (Cawdor HoF)

Cawdor (HoF)

Overview

The Trodden

“The lowest of the low, the crushed beneath the heel of the unfaithful — yet from the dust, we will rise.”

Origin

In the choking sump-shanties of Sumpstack Gamma, where the ash rains never cease and the sludge flows thicker than water, a forgotten congregation of beggars, lepers, and refuse-pickers began whispering prayers to the Emperor. They were the trodden underfoot, the unwanted — scavengers so low even the Redemptionists spat on them.

Their leader was Preacher Halbedash Hauberk, a one-eyed zealot who claimed to have received a vision while being beaten by Enforcers. As his ribs cracked beneath their boots, he said he heard the Emperor’s voice:

“All who are cast aside are my chosen. The pure are buried in the dirt.”

When he awoke in the trash pits days later, he gathered the crippled, the forgotten, and the diseased — those who had literally been trodden into the ground. Together they took up rags, masks, and scavenged weapons, binding their broken limbs with faith. Thus, The Trodden were born.

Creed and Purpose

The Trodden believe that true purity is found only through humiliation, suffering, and the dirt of the hive itself. They worship the Emperor not as a distant god, but as the Great Beggar King who walks unseen among the outcasts.

Their rites involve crawling through sludge, burning lice as “heretics,” and ritually trampling effigies of “the proud.” They reject all forms of cleanliness — dirt is holiness, and blood is redemption. Every scar, every disease, every deformity is considered a mark of His favor.

Symbols and Appearance

  • Colors: Dirty black and corpse-grey with smatterings of rusty orange, often crusted with grime and ash.

  • Mark: A crude bootprint burned or stitched into their rags. Many members brand a sole-mark on their own faces or backs.

  • Iconography: Crushed skulls — offerings “trodden to sanctity.”

Their masks are scavenged from broken respirators and filthy rags, nailed together with wire and bone. Some even melt candles into their tattred masks.

Tactics and Behavior

The Trodden advance like a wave of filth — slow, relentless, and unfeeling. They move through the underhive’s refuse, using their knowledge of the trash chutes and sump tunnels to appear from nowhere.

They favor flame, bludgeon, and shrapnel — weapons that grind and burn. They often set traps of broken glass or spiked boards, forcing enemies to stumble and “feel the Emperor’s tread.”

Before battle, Malchus or his lieutenants stomp the ground in rhythm, chanting:

“Crush the high! Praise the low! The Emperor walks below!”

Notable Members

  • Preacher Halbedash Hauberk – One-eyed prophet, wields a rusted relic combi-flamer he calls “The Heel of Faith.”

  • Matthias Baldrum – An imposing muscle bound zealot who believes consuming ash brings him closer to the Emperor’s suffering. It is most likely the reason for his sickly pale complexion.

  • Caban Caul –  His pallid boney figures cling to sack of scavenged bones and fungal spores, spreading “holy contagion” wherever he limps.

  • Little Boot Cowl – A juve acolyte, small and vicious, known for slipping past enemy positions and stabbing upward with sharpened rebar.

Reputation

In the underhive, The Trodden are both mocked and feared. To the unfaithful, they are a swarm of  lunatics. But to the downtrodden masses, they are saints — proof that even in the mire, the Emperor’s light shines.

When The Trodden march, the floor trembles with a thousand shuffling feet, and the faithful whisper:

“The Emperor walks below in the grime. Mind your step.”
